Come Rain or Shine:
I'll be there, no matter what the weather.
Ride Database Entry:
The Oaks
Meeting Point:

Glenbrook Station Carpark.

-33.769197, 150.622262 (Glenbrook Station Carpark)
Details:

This will be the classic Oaks route from Woodford to Glenbrook station via the firetrail then single track and then the last technical section at the end but with a twist it will be in the dark. I expect this ride will be a lot of fun especially the single track in the dark.

The pace will be social with a stop or two along the way to wait for straglers.

The plan is to meet at Glenbrook train station carpark and be ready and organised to go by 7.30pm to catch a train at 7.42pm arriving at Woodford by 8.13pm (straglers can catch up at Woodford if you miss the train) the trip down will take about an hour to an hour and a half.

Its a Friday night so maybe a drink somwhere local afterwards or bring something along to have at the end of the trail.

Who's in?

The first 3 riders on this ride would all be on 29ers, 1 single speed a 9 speed and me with a full set of gears, is this a sign of things to come? Like 29ers being more popular than 26ers one day? I won't be surprised.
John.

Paul's picture

I'm keen, I just have to check with the social secretary.

If I go I might start a little earlier and ride up meeting you guys at the heli pad or there abouts.

christine's picture

but will wait and see if anyone other than freakin 'roid boys are going to sign up!! Plus that is right on our deadline...
I do think it would be excellent fun...

Damien's picture

Not intending for this to be a race / training or serious ride its meant to be fun and social I will ride last this time and push any stragglers up the hills everyone is welcome the more the merrier.

pikey's picture

Just another marketing fad just like carbon frames and low carb beer!

Oh why are so many so gullible? Eye-wink

Pikey

christine's picture

so many MEN so gullible don't you mean!!

Damien and Co. if you don't think i will be oh so sloooow then I would love to come on the night ride! (but say if you think i will be as i am not at all precious about that stuff)

MEEE Smiling

Damien's picture

Gotta love fads I love mine but they are becoming popular I might have to go a 650b wheeled bike to stand out from the ever growing 29er crowd.

Paul's picture

Please please come Christine I need someone to keep me company.

Damien's picture

Of course not no such thing as too slow on a fun ride like this and it’s mostly down hill anyway and I promise to be the sweeper.

Gary's picture

Can you be trusted Damian to remember who else is on the ride.

Damien's picture

I know bloody hopeles on Wednesday sitting out at the end of the long trail with two riders missing with a flat tire - ops.

christine's picture

even i can't get lost on the Oaks trail!
are you going Paul? god i will have to make an effort and train for this one!

Paul's picture

I should be there. Will confirm over the weekend.

Carlgroover's picture

Those are two fads you should consider as the carbon frame would save you some weight, and the low ca... oops
Bye

Paul's picture

I'll be there.

barney's picture

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this site (good job by the way) and wouldn't mind tagging along on this ride. Are you cool to newbies joining?

Thanks,

Barney

pikey's picture

Fads: the only weight I would loose to the Carbon Frame and the Low carb beer fads is my wallet would be lighter Eye-wink

Pikey

Damien's picture

I did a bit of research and the 29er fad has been around since the very early nineties I would of thought it would of been and gone by now maybee they will disapeer when the current mountain bike fad ends.

lozza6's picture

Damien, defending his 29 steed with such honour!! Laughing out loud

But then again, if they have been around since the 90's..... surely by now they'd be "IT" if they were that great? Sticking out tongue

Damien's picture

All good things take time.

lozza6's picture

hehe

Damien's picture

Just the bike for you Hei Hei.

Damien's picture

Absolutely come along the more the merrier.

barney's picture

See you in the car park.

Damo's picture

Hope you don't mind another newbie on the ride? The Oaks at night sounds awesome! Cheers, Damian

Carlgroover's picture

I will suggest that any roid boys with unspent energy could ride back to Woodford for the training part of the social ride. I mostly ride back as I like riding bikes far more than riding trains.
John.

steveb's picture

has anyone got an idea how long it takes to get there on a Friday night in the traffic?
It's going to be cold, a hip flask maybe the go. Does anyone own a St Bernard. There must be someone out there old enough to know what I mean.

Damien's picture

On a weekend it takes me an hour from the inner west but for a Friday night I am estimating 1.5 hours at least from Annandale. I will be leaving shortly after 5.00pm and no later than 5.30pm to get up there by about 7.00pm.

Paul's picture

1 1/2 hours from Annandale would be my guess too.

I'm also planning to get there early but instead of catching the train I want to test the 29er SS on a slow ride up the trail - probably leaving between 7.00pm and 7.15pm.

Having never ridden a 29er SS any great distance (particularly up hill) this will be a test of man and machine and will probably could be very slow.

If all goes well I plan to meet the other coming down somewhere before they get to the Heli pad - it should also be a great way to warm up for the sniggle.

Damien's picture

I have ridden up the Oaks in the early morning dark on my own it was a bit freaky the sun was a welcome sight at the helipad.

leximack's picture

i have done the oaks at night with only 1 other person, if you get separated a bit it can be pretty scary, felt like there were things chasing me, mad for a fast ride though Smiling

Stuart M's picture

so that may make for a slower than normal drive time up to the mountains

ar_junkie's picture

Already on holidays.

O to be at school again!

Stuart M's picture

that pay for their holidays Eye-wink

christine's picture

if i am leaving from Oxford Falls what time would any one suggest i leave to get there vaguely on time? i realise this is a fairly dumb question but as usual, you are used to it!!

i can't tell you how much i giggled at men being scared of the dark!

Carlgroover's picture

very scared, as all the locals know there's things lurking around up here in the mountains that you wouldn't want to meet up with at any time. It's kept under wraps very tightly for the tourist dollar, but local legend Rex Gilroy has evidence to prove the existence of the yowie and the black panther in the Blue Mountains, this man has looked me in the eye assuring me that there is yowies here and who are we to question it, he's spent his life on the subject.
Check it out. http://www.mysteriousaustralia.com/
Be Scared.

Little-Ditty's picture

That is very scary. Smiling

Flynny's picture

The UFO base under the catchment zone.
http://www.mysteriousaustralia.com/rexufo/austra...
That's the real reason we're not allowed to ride there.

But on a serious note.
I have seen a big black panther like cat in the mountains and some experts think that's not so far fetched
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/11/01/106759...

Paul's picture

So are you saying the Yeti would be at home with all the other beasties.

Carlgroover's picture

but I'd be worried the Yowie could be attracted to a Yeti, so maybe not. What if we call Rexy to be sure?
The panther. One day while trout fishing at Oberon lake I left a trout(now dead) I'd caught in the lake surrounded by rocks to avoid carrying it/warming it in my backpack on my return the trout was gone, looking around I found it several metres away and half eaten and not by something nibbling at it, whatever ate this was taking substantial bites from it, could it have been the panther?

christine's picture

you guys are too funny...

Carlgroover's picture

I don't believe that you believe that I believe in Rex's Yowies running around the bush up here, but if you do believe that I believe in Yowies then who's gullible? Smiling
Cheers

lorrie's picture

It's going to be a cold ride.. better dig out my winter stuff!

christine's picture

want a lift? I have a ute and since George has decided not to come along i have room for one more...
of course, i still don't know what time i am leaving!

pikey's picture

Christine,

I too am a lone sole heading in the direction of the setting sun for this Friday's extra special night ride.

BUT, get in a car with you driving Ha! Your a bloody rev head, we would be there in 30 mins the way you drive.

However, would you like a lift, perhaps?

Sleep on it.

(no stuart don't go there)

Pikey

Don't worry what other people are thinking,

christine's picture

pikey's picture

I'll call you Friday to arrange timing for the night ride.
